Dream Boldly: Practical Steps to Create a Vision for Your Future

How to Use Faith, Prayer, and Practical Tools to Build Your Future with Purpose
Life doesnโt always look like we imagine, does it? As a wife, mom, homemaker, and small business owner, I know how easy it is to get swept up in the busyness of life and forget to pause and dream about the future. Maybe itโs the endless to-do lists, or maybe itโs the seasons of life that feel like one long string of โgritโ rather than โgrace.โ But Iโve come to realize that dreaming boldly is a powerful way to take stock of where we are and where we want to go.
Whether youโre navigating military life, balancing a home and family, or stepping out into a new business venture, creating a vision for your future is something every woman should doโeven if youโre just starting small. With Godโs guidance, we can dream big, take action, and trust Him with the outcome.
Letโs talk about how you can take practical steps to create a vision for your future, even if it feels a little intimidating or overwhelming. Ready? Letโs dive in!
1. Start with Prayer: Seek Godโs Guidance

Before we start planning or crafting any vision, letโs remember where our true guidance comes from. I know for me, especially in seasons of challenge (like health struggles or uncertainty), itโs easy to try and figure it all out on my own. But we are called to seek the Lord in everything, and that includes our future!
Start by praying for clarity and direction. Ask God to help you see the bigger picture, and give you the courage to dream beyond the ordinary. James 1:5 tells us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” Trust that He will guide you in His timing.
And donโt forget to write down your thoughts, your prayers, and any insights that come to you in those moments of quiet with God. This will serve as the foundation for your vision.
2. Create a Vision Board: Visualize Your Goals

Okay, letโs get a little practical. Once youโve prayed and reflected on what God might be leading you to, itโs time to make it tangible! A vision board is one of my favorite tools for staying focused on my goals and keeping my dreams in sight. Hereโs how to do it:
- Gather Supplies: Grab a poster board, some magazines or printouts, scissors, glue, and markers. You can also use a corkboard or bulletin board if you want to pin things that change over time.
- Identify Your Goals: Think about different areas of your life: faith, family, health, career, and personal growth. What are you hoping for in the next year or beyond?
- Find Visuals: Cut out pictures or words that represent your goals. Maybe youโre dreaming about more time with your family, launching a business, or going on a family vacation. Visualizing those goals can keep you motivated!
- Arrange and Glue: Put your images and words on the board, arranging them in a way that speaks to you. Leave space for Godโs work in your lifeโthings you might not even know to ask for yet.
A vision board doesnโt have to be perfect. The goal is to keep your dreams in front of you and stay focused on them, especially when life gets busy.
3. Use a Prayer Board: Keep God at the Center of Your Dreams
A prayer board is something Iโve found to be incredibly helpful. While a vision board focuses on your goals and aspirations, a prayer board keeps you grounded in Godโs will. Itโs a space where you can write out specific prayer requests related to your dreams, family, and any challenges you might be facing.
Hereโs how you can create one:
- Choose a Spot: Find a place in your home where you can keep your prayer board visible. Maybe itโs near your desk or in the kitchen where you can see it daily.
- Write Your Prayers: Jot down your prayers for each goal or dream on your board. You can also include Scriptures that resonate with you as you seek Godโs will in your life.
- Update Often: As God answers prayers or your dreams change, update the board. This is a beautiful way to see how God moves and provides, and it can strengthen your faith when you look back at how Heโs worked in your life.
Itโs a way of saying, โGod, this is what Iโm trusting You for,โ while still leaving room for His will to unfold in ways we might not expect.
4. Gain Clarity through Reflection and Planning

Once youโve got your vision board and prayer board set up, take some time to reflect. This is where we often get tripped upโthinking we need to have everything figured out all at once. But clarity comes over time, often through small steps and prayerful reflection.
Here are some tips to help you gain clarity:
- Set Small Goals: Break down your big dreams into smaller, more manageable tasks. If youโre a small business owner, for example, maybe your big goal is launching a new product. Your small goals could be setting up a website, creating a marketing plan, or gathering materials.
- Stay Flexible: Donโt be afraid to adjust your plans as you go. Life doesnโt always go according to our perfect vision, but that doesnโt mean we canโt keep moving forward with Godโs guidance.
- Stay Accountable: Share your vision with a trusted friend or mentor who can pray with you and keep you accountable as you pursue your dreams.
Clarity doesnโt happen overnightโitโs a process. So donโt rush it, and trust that God will reveal whatโs next in His timing.
Final Thoughts: Trusting God with Your Future

As you begin to dream boldly, remember that your future is in Godโs hands. Proverbs 16:9 says, โThe heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.โ We can make all the plans we want, but ultimately, we trust that Godโs path for us is perfect.
So, dream big, write it down, pray over it, and take those small steps forward. And when the seasons of grit comeโbecause they willโremember that His grace is always sufficient. You can trust Him with your dreams, and He will be faithful to lead you.
